NAACP Joining New London Community in Rally Against Racism

A man who died after being Tased in New London and allegations of racism after a football game prompted the NAACP to join a rally.

Lashano Gilbert, 31, died on Saturday, Oct. 4, after reportedly being Tased twice by New London police, over a less than eight hour period, according to WFSB.

After a New London-Plainfield football game on Friday, Sept. 26, racist comments were allegedly made toward the New London athletes, the Hartford Courant reported.

Tamara K. Lanier, CT NAACP Criminal Justice Chair, said New London students deserve a true commitment to change and she encouraged people to attend a rally against racism.

The rally will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at 2 Union Plaza in downtown New London.

Participants include the Gilbert Family, New London youth, Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, the ACLU, the African-American Affairs Commission, and the Council on American–Islamic Relations, Lanier said.
