New London Coast Guard Station Names New Commander

She was given command during a ceremony Monday.

NEW LONDON, CT- Lt. Nina McDonald was named commander of Coast Guard Station New London on Monday.

According to their Facebook page, Lt. Dan Tavernier turned over command to McDonald at a ceremony held at the station, The Day reported. Tavernier was meanwhile promoted to lieutenant commander during the event, and will be heading off to Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, to obtain a second Master's Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.

McDonald now holds responsibility over 55 crewmembers, according to The Day. The station covers a 360-square-mile area and 75 miles of river, as well as coordinates massive public events with local governments among other tasks.
