New London College Ranked Among Top 50 Schools By the Sea, Study Says

Two Connecticut colleges earned a spot on a list of the top colleges by the sea, according to a new study.

NEW LONDON, CT – Mitchell College was recently featured on a list of the “50 Best Colleges By the Sea,”by online college review journal, Best College Reviews.

Two Connecticut schools were featured on the list. Mitchell College placed at No. 23.

The universities and colleges that made the list were judged based on three factors:

• Proximity to the beach (50%).
• Specific marine educational centers, degrees, or research facilities (30%).
• Recreational opportunities on the sea (20%).

Cited for its prime location at the mouth of the Thames River and entrance to Long Island Sound, Mitchell College is also noted for being only 1 mile away from the beach.

“Rolling lawns, wooded walkways, sandy beaches, and fabulous landscaping make this campus a serene place for study...Southwest Connecticut is a major vacation destination due to its gorgeous coastline, sunny weather, and relatively mild winters,” the study said.

Yale University also placed at No. 38 on the list, cited for being situated 2.8 miles from the beach and nearby the “beautiful parks” of New Haven Harbor. The Long Wharf area and East Rock Park were also noted as a plus for the famed New Haven-based college.

While schools in West Coast states like California and southern states like Florida dominated the list, New England was still well-represented. Schools in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine also placed in various spots on the list.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi topped the list, with an enrollment of 10,100 and a location less than a mile from the beach. University of California’s Santa Barbara and San Diego campuses rounded out the top 3, at No. 2 and 3 respectively.
