NEW LONDON, CT — A New London court awarded $1.3 million to a Waterford motorist whose car was destroyed when it struck a cow while traveling Interstate 395.
The crash occurred Apr. 22, 2018, around 3:00 a.m., according to a news release from LTKE LAW in New Haven, which brought the case against the cow's owner.
The animal had been one of two cows only recently acquired at a Middletown cattle auction and had yet to become fully acclimated to its new surrounding when both bovines broke through their pasture's fence. The cows fled into the woods, less than a half-mile from I-395.

The cow's owner attempted to track his new animal down, but abandoned the search in the dead of night.
The plaintiff's attorney Steven Errante testified the cow crash was the cause of his client Stefan Lapkowski's medical bills, lost wages, and injuries, which include post-traumatic stress syndrome.
