New London Named 35th Most Dangerous City in the U.S.
The ranking is based on the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents.
New London joins three other Connecticut towns on Location, Inc.’s NeighborhoodScout list of the 100 most dangerous cities with 25,000 or more people in the U.S.
The other Nutmeg state cities are Bridgeport, Hartford and New Haven.
“Our research reveals the 100 most dangerous cities in America with 25,000 or more people, based on the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents,” according to the NeighborhoodScout page. “Violent crimes include homicide, forcible rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault.”

The data company used information on the number of violent crimes reported to the FBI that occurred in each city and the population to obtain its results.

When it came to the safest cities in the U.S., Connecticut fared much better. According to the NeighborhoodScout data on the 100 safest U.S. cities calculated using the same criteria as above, here are the CT mentions:
- Cheshire
- Glastonbury
- Greenwich
- New Milford
- Shelton
- Vernon
- Westport
In related news, the state released its annual Crime in Connecticut Report and found that overall crime rate dropped 8.6 percent in 2013 compared to the previous year.
