New London Police Investigating Lethal Heroin Supply

A dozen people were hospitalized for overdoses in and around the city since Wednesday, one of whom died.

New London police are investigating how a lethal supply of heroin has turned up in the city, according to reports.

Since Wednesday, a dozen people have been treated for overdoses at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, and one of those individuals died.

Officers have already been to the hospital to interview victims about the brown-colored heroin, which so far appears to have been sold only in New London.

“They’re working really hard trying to find out who’s selling it, where they’re selling it and getting it off the street,” L+M’s Dr. Deirdre Cronin told The Day, speaking about local police.

A dozen such overdoses in two days, nine of which occurred on Thursday alone, was “unprecedented” for L+M, and more could happen because this batch of heroin is considered to be extremely potent.

“There’s always a risk with the heroin supply being more concentrated or mixed with other substances that have more potent effects,” Charles McKay, associate medical director of the Connecticut Poison Control Center, told The Day. “We encourage people to reach out for treatment. This is just another demonstration of how things can go bad.”
