Update: New London Police Arrest Student, 11, Accused of Discharging Gun in School

The gun accidentally discharged in a bathroom Wednesday.

Update 2:20 p.m.: New London Police arrested the 11-year-old accused of bringing a gun to school. The arrest occurred around 1:20 p.m.

The juvenile was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, carrying a pistol without a permit unlawful discharge of a firearm and reckless endangerment.

“It has been determined that no threats had been made prior to the incident towards any students and staff and that it is an isolated incident,” said Deputy Chief Peter Reichard in a release.

Original story: An 11-year-old who brought a gun into school Wednesday was suspended after the gun was accidentally discharged in a bathroom, according to a statement from the school system.

Police planned to have additional officers at Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School Thursday and Friday, according to The Day.

The gun went off minutes after school dismissal and students were taken to a safe area as police combed the school in a search.

“Officers were able to determine that the handgun had discharged a shot inside of the school,” New London Deputy Chief Peter Reichard said in a press release. “School officials worked closely with New London Police to ensure the safety of the students that were present in the building at the time of the incident.”

Surveillance footage is being reviewed and parents were notified via a robo-call about the incident. Letters will also be sent home.
