New London Sports Roundup: A Good Start For NLHS Football

The New London High School football team has gotten off to a good start as it seeks to maintain its legacy. The Whalers defeated Killingly 39-6 in the opening game against Killingly on Friday. According to The Bulletin, new head coach Duane Maranda - arriving from Bacon Academy to replace the outgoing Jeff Larson - capitalized on the team's speed with a number of short, successful offensive drives. The team returns to home turf at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 to take on Montville.

The NLHS girls' soccer team won its opening game on Tuesday, defeating The Academy of the Holy Family 3-1. They're in the midst of another game right now, hoping to pick up a second win in a contest with Plainfield.

The NLHS boys' soccer team has started the season as a victim of two shutouts. Montville defeated the Whalers 4-0 on Thursday, while Waterford dealt the team a 1-0 blow on home turf on Saturday. The Whalers next take on Killingly at a 3:45 p.m. away game on Thursday.

At the Williams School, the field hockey team starts with an 0-2 record including a 5-0 shutout by the Ethel Walker School on Wednesday. The Blues are also looking for a soccer win; the boys' team is at 0-2 with the last result a 2-1 defeat against the MacDuffie School on Wednesday, while the Wheeler School defeated the girls' team 4-3 on Wedneday.

College

The Connecticut College women's volleyball team has racked up several victories to start the season with a 6-1 record, the latest a 3-2 win against Middlebury College on Sunday. The team's only loss was a 3-1 defeat against Williams College on Friday. The field hockey team is undefeated after three games, the last of which dealt a 3-1 defeat to Hamilton College. In soccer, the Conn College men's team has a 1-0-2 record after a 1-1 tie with Hamilton on Saturday while the women's team is 0-2 after losing 2-1 to Hamilton on the same day.

The Coast Guard Academy women's volleyball team is also doing well, earning its fifth win in a row - and 19th straight home win - with 3-0 results over Wheaton College and Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday. On the same day, the Bears also fought their way to a 2-1 victory in double overtime in a men's soccer game against Springfield College. The academy's football record for the season is 1-1 after a 35-21 win against MIT on Saturday.

At Mitchell College, the Mariners are struggling in the early season. The Coast Guard men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season against Mitchell on Wednesday with a 4-0 result, improving its record to 1-3 while Mitchell slips to 0-2. The women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision against Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday and has an opening record of 2-5. The women's tennis team hasn't yet picked up a win, with the latest loss coming from a 3-0 shutout by Bay Path College on Saturday.
