New London Sports Roundup: CIAC Tournament Season Approaching

Williams School tennis team dealt first losses; Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College concluding with track, sailing championships

New London High School

We’ve arrived at CIAC tournament season. This is the last week to count for these brackets and the first tournament rounds to start next week.

The baseball team (10-8) has the healthiest record as the end of the regular season approaches, posting two wins in the past week. The Whalers defeating Griswold 8-2 on Monday and Norwich Tech 12-2 on Thursday. In the final games of the regular season, New London will take on Wheeler today and Norwich Free Academy on Tuesday. Both games start at 3:45 p.m. on New London’s home turf.

The softball team (1-16) was dealt a series of defeats, falling to Griswold 16-1 on Tuesday, to Wheeler 7-0 on Wednesday, and to Tourtellotte 11-5 on Thursday. The team concludes its regular season with a series of 4 p.m. games this week: against Montville at home today, East Lyme away on Tuesday, and Grasso Tech at home on Wednesday.

The boys’ tennis team concluded its regular season with a 3-15 record. The Whalers lost to Stonington 3-4 on Monday, to Fitch 2-5 on Thursday, and to East Lyme 7-0 on Friday, but salvaged win in the final game by defeating Killingly 4-3 on Sunday.

The girls’ tennis team (1-15) was swept three times in a row, dropping 7-0 results to Stonington on Monday, Fitch on Thursday, and East Lyme on Friday. They have two final away games, a 3:45 p.m. match against Killingly today and 4 p.m. match against Norwich Tech on Tuesday.

Williams School

The boys’ tennis team had its undefeated season broken, losing to Avon Old Farms 6-1 on Monday and to Hamden Country Day School 4-3 on Wednesday. The losses mar an otherwise perfect record as the Blues finish at 11-2.

The baseball team lost to Marianapolis 11-6 on Monday in the SENE Playoffs, but won a consolation game against St. Thomas More 5-2 on Wednesday. The team finishes the season at 5-9.

The girls’ lacrosse team lost to Falmouth 8-7 in the SENE Tournament on Wednesday, ending with an 8-4 record.

Coast Guard Academy

Athletes competed in the ECAC Division III Track and Field Championships on Friday. Four will go on to compete in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which run from Thursday through Saturday.

The Bears will also take part in the College Sailing Women’s National Championship this week.

Connecticut College

The Camels also competed in the ECAC Division III Track and Field Championships, setting a new school record in the 4x800 relay. The NCAA track and field championship, and the sailing team’s participation in the Sperry Top-Sider Women’s National Championship, will close out Connecticut College’s 2012-2013 athletic season.

Mitchell College

The 2012-2013 athletic season at Mitchell College has concluded.

Standout athletes

  • Tristan Cole, Mike LeDuc, Ian Rathkey, Niall Williams: set a new Connecticut College school record in the 4x800 relay and placed second in the ECAC Division III Track and Field Championships with a  time of 7:44.56 
  • Isaias Cruz: had a home run, scored twice, and drove in three runs in New London’s baseball win against Norwich Tech, according to The Bulletin 
  • Jason Edwards: earned his first win of the season as New London pitcher by retiring the last 14 batters he faced, according to The Bulletin 
  • Clay Kosack: Coast Guard athlete, won the ECAC title in the decathlon with 6,384 points 
  • Adam Scalesse: named Athlete of the Year in the New England region for the 2013 NCAA Division III outdoor track season by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association
