New London Transfer Station Rule Change Proves Controversial

The city announced earlier this month that the transfer station will no longer accept materials from commercial entities.

NEW LONDON, CT — New London announced earlier this month that the transfer station will no longer accept materials from commercial entities, according to a city document. The change went into effect Monday.

"The transfer station will continue to serve residents with all current services consistent with State DEEP requirements," the document reads. "This adjustment brings the City into compliance with terms of the Air Space Lease between the City and Connecticut DOT regarding permitted uses of the Public Works complex."

The matter was discussed at a recent City Council meeting, which led to some tense moments., according to The Day.

Councilor John Satti, who owns a lawn care business, said that the move will drastically increase costs for hauling brush, which he will now have to take to Montville.

The change is aimed at addressing potentially hazardous brush piles that have built up and to bring the transfer station into compliance with a lease set to expire in 2026.
