White sand beach tops votes in places to go when you want to stay close to home

In , we asked you where in New London is the best place to check out when you want to see something fun and interesting but don't want to book te hotel and plane tickets to do so. We picked six places and invited you to add your own as well.
At the end of the week, easily topped the choices with 33 out of 56 votes, or 58 percent. The was in second with 12 votes (21 percent) while had five votes (eight percent). and each had two votes (three percent) while the and "other" each had one vote (one percent).

The poll comes just as Ocean Beach is . The Mile-Long Tag and Craft Sale to benefit Ocean Beach Park is going on right now, running until 3 p.m. The Boardwalk Creamery Ice Cream Stand is open for business on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights, and the first classic car Cruise Night is happening on Monday evening.
The Garde, meanwhile, has a Mother's Day show tonight. This features R&B singer CASE along with musical guest Mr. Cheeks and comedians Marshall Brandon and Smokey Suarez. Ticket prices range from $15 to $30.

Despite the single vote for "other," you had quite a few suggestions in the comments. These included the Arboretum, , , , , and . Sandra Chalk, director of , suggested taking a self-guided tour of downtown.
"Start at the Parade - read the plaques about New London's history that tell you where else to go," she commented. "Stroll State and Bank Streets, enjoy historic architecture, art galleries and unusual shops. Have a great lunch at one of our restaurants and visit the Waterfront Park to enjoy the view, the water, and perhaps a submarine!"
