This Week in New London, March 21-27

Isn’t every week in New London an arts and culture kind of week? Maybe so, but has dubbed the latest roundup of upcoming events the “Arts and Culture Edition,” and it's certainly fitting.

It starts with a pair of movie choices tonight. The holds a screening of at 6:15 p.m. and follows it up with a discussion. The continues its film series with , starting at 7:30 p.m.; admission is $4.

Art openings are out in force on Saturday. and the Connecticut chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club Conservation Committee debut pieces of reused materials with “RecylArt,” opening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the . opens a multimedia presentation involving the connection of art and music and dance, at 6 p.m. on the same day. And at , the work of four artists will be on display with opening from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The is also featuring New Deal murals until June 9.

But it wouldn’t be a week in New London without scads of music. New London Main Street’s first picks come on Friday night, when Richard Zack plays his regular at from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. You can also check out for Friday Night Folk at 8 p.m. at the ; tickets are $20 at the door, $17 in advance, and $10 for students. You’ll be sure to catch a lot of good music at the second annual , starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Garde Arts Center; if you can still get a ticket, they’re going for $10 apiece. You can also check out the Jazz Trio’s regular Monday evening performance from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Bean and Leaf.

Finally, a few businesses and organizations are holding special events and promotions. For $55 and an RSVP, you can check out the Diversity Chef’s Table dinner at at 6 p.m. tonight. With weather this nice, New London County Community Gardens is kicking off the season with a work day and potluck meal from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the garden on the corner of Williams and Mercer Streets. introduces jewelry by Kimberly Kantharaj from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The New London Maritime Society holds a Founders Day luncheon at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday with a talk from Dr. Donald L. Murphy, chief scientist for the Coast Guard’s International Ice Patrol; this takes place at the Officers Club. And the continues its “Chess Knight” activity from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
