Summer Reading, Poetry In The Wild, and Summer Solstice

I got word today that the weekly newsletter on upcoming events from is going to be a little late arriving today. So I beg your leave as I take a look at their events listings and pull together this roundup to post in time for 3 p.m.

It’s the official first day of summer today, and with an appropriately scorching day like this you might well be looking to get to the beach or stay indoors with the air conditioning and a good book. The has you covered, as they feature several activities in the coming week. A special Batman-themed summer reading party visits the library’s children’s room at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. Other activities include a Hasbro games activity at 11:30 a.m. on the same day, “Fun Mons” games and snacks at 3 p.m. on Monday, and preschool story time at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. For older kids, there is a movement, music, and expression event for teens at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

On the poetry side, you can check out the “Poetry of the Wild” boxes around town through the end of August. These verses are available for perusal outside the , , , , garden, Mitchell Beach, , , Public Library of New London, , and garden at Sabila & DeSantis. Poets are welcome to share their works on Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. at Bean and Leaf.

This coffeehouse also leads the music scene this coming week. Regular performances include Richard Zack’s at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sunny Morning La La at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, and the Jazz Trio at 8 p.m. on Monday. If you’ve got a favorite record, bring it to at 7 p.m. on Tuesday for a night of spinning. Today is your last chance to take advantage of the summer solstice sale at , where your second record purchase is half off. Finally, you can peruse some classic cars while listening to classic tunes every Monday evening at 6 p.m. for Ocean Beach Park’s Cruise Nights.
