What is a video conferencing system? Q&As

Q:What is a video conferencing system?
A: A hardware system that includes a codec (computer), Camera (HD), Microphone that allows video communication to be sent and processed.

Q: Can I use my computer with a camera?
A: Yes but it varies from service to service. Services like Skype, Google Talk, FaceTime you cannot connect to a traditional video conferencing system. If connected via the cloud (eg. easymeeting.net) one can use their PC, Mac, iPhone /Android and Tablets using a simple app or by going to the website and "join meeting".

Q:Why a system vs web based?
A: It is not really a "us against them" question it is what you need and what class of service. Web based have come a long way but the quality is less stable and does not give the ultimate user experience. One has to sit in front of a true hardware based video conferencing system to realize how good it is. Web based... less good but ideal for calling grandma!

Q: It must be expensive!
A: not really. If comparing to free services like Skype and Facetime which are not designed for multiple participants then yes... those are private home use services and yes some businesses use them. It creates awareness and that is great for the industry of video communication. However for business class one has to remember support, stability and user experience. Hardware based systems start in the low to mid 1000s of dollars, some can be leased from a couple hundred dollars per month. Just imagine cutting 1-2 flights or 2hr drives a month. You already are at break even. Add ad hoc meetings whereas you can read body language etc... and you have an immediate ROI.

Q:where can I find a local vendor?
A:There are many and using google is a good idea if you know what you are looking for.  Contact easymeeting.net in Mystic as they have their own showroom and can demonstrate what options are available for you.
