What is new in “New London”? Bessie the K9 will soon get bailed out after more than 100 day in a tiny cell. Skippy and the mayor are away on vacation. Who is left to run the city?
The city council passed a school budget without any real accountability or transparency. Wait it is an election year so many council will not work for the people and accountability; they choose their personal goal of reelection over the people of the community.
It is funny how when it is an election year the needs and desires of the community get swiftly swept aside by the same councilors. This seems quite a self centered and egotistical move for a non paid elected position.

No word from the mayor about his plan to meet the requirements of the K9 ordinance. Will he just wait to see if he gets his own people in office on November 5th and repeal the ordinance?
The big question about if city employees should be elected to city council. As the council president puts it, “The charter and state statutes allow it” Does that mean we should continue to allow it? Maybe the flip flop on the idea of charter review by council president Passero was based in part on his desire to see that he could still run. It was after all council president Passero that benefits from the money that is budgeted for the fire department and councilor Nolan that benefits from money budgeted for the police department. It would be a cleaner process if the charter was changed and no city employees were permitted to hold elected offices in the town that they are employed. But council president Passero was successful in shooting down the issue of charter review. A conflict there one would think.

Police officers continue to leave New London at an alarming rate and the patrol strength of NLPD is approaching, if not already at a crisis level of manning. The men and women of NLPD cannot engage in any proactive policing activities due to the current staffing levels and everything becomes strictly reactionary. That leaves the criminal element to do as they please while the police officers that are still here are busy on other calls.
Again the charter is tossed aside by the mayor as workers begin working on the Lighthouse Inn property without an appropriations ordinance from the city council. How convenient that the mayor and Skippy are away on vacation so that questions can not be answered.
While this work is done to beautify the Light Inn property there are many pieces of city property that are unkempt, grass growing tall promoting the proliferation of fleas, ticks and other unwelcome health and safety conditions. If you see any such conditions please send to this blog site and we will post them. On the newlondonpatch.com site you can post yourself.
