New Milford Library Renovation Will Go To Public Referendum
The decision whether or not to green light the $8.5 million project will be up to the voters at the Election Day polls.
NEW MILFORD, CT — Voters will decide the fate of the library at the polls in November despite pleas from some library supporters to make the decision at a town meeting this month, the News Times is reporting.
Many supporters of the library are dismayed by the referendum decision, as they feel the renovations are more likely to fail at a general ballot, where more voices will be heard, than in a town meeting.
The council has already approved the design of the revamp, which would see the library expand from 15,000 to 22,000 square feet, add more meeting space, and remodel the facade to better fit in with the current downtown architecture. The library will also be made compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The total cost of the project is set to be $8.5 million.
