UPDATED VIDEO: Family Claims Racism Led to Basketball Brawl
Due to the size of the crowd and what Bethel police described as "growing hostility," Danbury and Newtown police were called in to assist.

DANBURY, CT-- Update: The daughter of an African-American Bristol man arrested at Friday night's Bethel vs. Bristol basketball game has posted a video of the incident to her Facebook page and is claiming that Bethel police are racist.
A Bethel mother who was at the game stated that the man, Rod Hickey, "threw himself to the floor" after being asked "repeatedly" to leave. An officer can be heard on the video asking people to "get out of the building" more than 20 times.
The daughter of the man stated on her Facebook page that the family plans on suing, however, Bethel Police Chief Jeffrey Finch told Patch that police have not yet been contacted regarding a lawsuit. The family could not be reached for comment as of this posting. Finch has seen the video which he said does not prove anything.
Finch told Patch: "He was yelling and swearing at the cops to get their hands off of his daughter. It wasn't even his daughter."
The girl was the niece of Mr. Hickey.
"What makes someone think police can't put their hands on them when they are repeatedly asked to leave and don't," Finch said. "We have statements from teachers and coaches saying they felt threatened. The man confronted Lieutenant Libertini and he refused to leave. He didn't know if the man had a weapon on him or not and he felt threatened. That's why they had to call for back-up."
A second video was posted to Mr. Hickey's daughter's Facebook page where a woman can be heard saying, "Don't worry. You 'bout to get a paid a lot of money."
Bristol lost the game, 49-48.
Patch reached out to the family, however, as of this posting they have yet to comment.
Original post:
In what could have been a large brawl between rival teams, Bethel police thwarted a potentially dangerous situation after a basketball game's fans became unruly, according to a police report.
Bethel police said in a release that Bristol parents and fans began yelling and taunting Bethel High School coaches, referees and fans and were asked to leave. As they were exiting the game on March 4, police saw two Bristol girls taunting Bethel girls and police escorted them out of the gym. A Bristol man yelled to police to take their hands off "his daughter." However, police determined later it was not his daughter.
The Bristol man, Roderick Hickey, 44, became unruly, and a large crowd gathered. The crowd began pushing and shoving and Danbury and Newtown police were called in for backup.

Hickey refused to exit the building and had to be forcibly removed from the doorway. Both he and the officers fell to the floor during the scuffle and Hickey claimed his back was injured so an ambulance was called in. He refused medical attention and was charged with breach of peace and interfering with an officer. He is due in Danbury Superior Court on March 15, 2016.
