Newtown Rotary was pleased to host Julie Savino, president of the Newtown Scholarship Association which was established in 1937 as a not-for-profit organization to promote and advance the education of secondary school graduates residing in Newtown by providing need-based financial aid. Ms. Savino spoke about how the NSA has to date helped over 1000 students achieve their goal of post-secondary education and awarded over $3 million in scholarships thanks to the generosity of Newtown residents, civic organizations and local businesses. In 1937 a single scholarship for $50 was awarded; today, over 70 students receive scholarships annually totaling over $230,000, a remarkable increase and an incredible reflection on the Newtown community. In support of their activities, NSA is preparing for their 21st Annual Jack Friel Memorial Golf Tournament to be held on June 17th at Rock Ridge Country Club. This year's tournament is being held in honor of First Selectwoman Patricia E. Llodra, in recognition of her tremendous service to Newtown.
Newtown Rotary was pleased to present Ms. Savino with a check for $5000, continuing Newtown Rotary's longtime annual support of NSA and their important work. Those interested in making a donation or applying for a scholarship should visit NSA's website at newtownscholarship.org.
Additionally, the organizers of the "Music, Light & Love - an Evening for Newtown" visited the club to describe their recent successful event. Laura Landau, the producer of the concert, and national recording artists Lucinda Rowe and Michael Connolly, both lifelong residents of Newtown, were on hand to present a check for $1700, proceeds from the event to be used for the Newtown Rotary Foundation Sandy Hook School Fund, to the club. Ms. Landau explained that the goal of the event was to provide music, meditation and inspiration to the people of Newtown following the tragic events of 12/14/2012. "Our goal was to present a program that would make you laugh, make you cry, take you on an escape and, hopefully, bring some thoughts of peace," she explained. Ms. Rowe went on, "For as long as I can remember, the Newtown Rotary Club has always worked to support our town and its people, and when we were considering how best to use this money we knew that entrusting it to NRC to put it to work effectively was the best option."
