Exciting Update from NMS School Based Health Center

School Based Health Center boasts convenient, comprehensive medical and mental health services for all Newtown Middle School students.

Hello Newtown Families!

The School Based Health Center (SBHC) at Newtown Middle School is the first SBHC in Newtown!  This unique center offers comprehensive medical and mental health services to all middle school students at no out-of-pocket cost.  Our services are available for all NMS students regardless of insurance status (private, state, or none at all).  The convenience of the SBHC is that parents don’t have to leave work to take their children to appointments.  Instead, they can be seen at school and return to class as appropriate.  SBHC staff can communicate with parents via telephone.  All services are confidential.

Throughout the school year students visit the SBHC for many different reasons.  Some common reasons for medical visits include asthma, poison ivy, concussion screening, ongoing headaches, and strep throat.  Some reasons for mental health visits include anxiety, sadness, peer and family relationships, difficulty getting work done, poor attendance, and dealing with divorce/loss.

What’s New?

Medical-The SBHC offers flu vaccines for students who have Husky insurance or who are uninsured through Connecticut’s Vaccines for Children Program.

Mental Health-The SBHC Social Worker is running several student groups for middle schoolers.  A new group that will begin shortly is a group for 7th grade girls dealing with parental divorce.  If you think your middle schooler might benefit from participating in this group, or one focused on another topic, please let us know.
