Letter to the Editor from Candace Fay, 2nd District State Rep. Candidate

Candace Fay is running against Dan Carter for State Rep. in the 2nd District for Newtown, Danbury, Redding and Bethel.

Letter to the Editor:

Apparently, my opponent, Dan Carter, is ashamed to run on his record, and thinks it is
“negative” to point out the way he voted on bills, you know, how he performed in his job. In a
recent op-ed piece to the Bethel Patch, Dan tries to deflect the attention his “one little thing said”
has attracted from news media throughout the entire nation. His “one little thing he said” related
to groups founded after one of the most horrific tragedies this nation has ever seen, and directly
attacked them. So, not so little after all.

Dan states that he works across the aisle, however he has not demonstrated that in his four years
as State Representative. He has simply voted “no” to what he states are “imperfect bills.” He
has also stated that we should expect more from our state representatives. Well, guess what? I
do expect more and quite frankly Dan has not been making the grade. Dan claims to have many
good ideas, however not one of those ideas have made it into the bills. Thus, he continues to
vote “no” to these “imperfect bills.” His argument is incredulous. And, if this is true, well, then
obviously he doesn’t fight hard enough because according to him none of his great ideas are
never included in any of the proposed bills. Thus, he is forced to vote “no.”

There you have it, we agree that positive is better than negative, so elect someone who will bring
a positive approach to legislating, not simply vote no on everything. It is time for a change.
As for me, I am a home-owner who pays property taxes. I’m also a small business owner and I
know how hard it is to start-up a business - I also know what it takes to succeed. We can attract
more small businesses to our community by enhancing our public education system and
modernizing our transportation system.

These are the two key areas that businesses look at when they are deciding where to establish or relocate jobs. Making more funding available for small businesses would certainly encourage folks to set-up start-up companies. We should closely monitor where the money is going and ensure that it is being used wisely, i.e. funding for employee positions. We need to attract more manufacturing companies to our area.

We can do this by investing in our vocational and technical schools and giving those teachers the resources they need to teach these students - who will then be ready to work upon graduation.
