Newtown Governor's Horse Guard Threatened by Proposed Budget Cut
The horse guard units in Avon and Newtown could be threatened by a proposed budget cut.
The Governor’s Horse Guard could potentially end up horse-less if proposed budget cuts go through.
The First Company Governor’s Horse Guard was started in Avon in 1778 and The Second Company was established in 1808 in Newtown. They fall under the state’s National Guard.
A $70,000 proposed cut could impact the money used to care and feed the 20 horses, according to the Hartford Courant.

The units aren’t active military and are most often seen at parades and ceremonial functions. They are also used in programs for youth and active duty soldiers.
The two guard stations have nonprofits that help raise money for the horses food and care. There is worry that it will fall upon them to totally care for and feed the horses.
