Newtown Legislative Council to Discuss Water Rate Hike, Short-Term Rentals

The Newtown Legislative Council will consider a 6% increase for Fairfield Hills water system rates and a new short-term rental ordinance.

NEWTOWN, CT — The Newtown Legislative Council will hold a regular meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 21. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Municipal Building, located at 3 Primrose Street.

The agenda includes several key items for discussion and potential action. One item is a proposed 6 percent increase to the primary water usage rate for the Fairfield Hills water system, which would be effective Jan. 1, 2026. The council will also consider an ordinance regarding short-term rentals, specifically prohibiting rentals under 30 days.

Additional items under new business include several grant impact statements. These cover the Natural Resources Conservation Service Stream Bed Restoration, the NRCS Buy Outs Program for 28/230 Berkshire Road, and the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program through the Department of Justice. The council will also review a special appropriation of $20,000 for legal services related to non-monetary claims defense and insurance payout.

A financial impact statement for the CT Brownfield Land Bank/Batchelder Environmental Assessment is also on the agenda. The council will also discuss the Capital Improvement Plan for 2027-2031. The meeting will feature reports from First Selectman Bruce Walczak and Finance Director Glenys Salas.

Public comment opportunities are available during two distinct periods. The first period allows commentary on agenda items, while the second period permits discussion of agenda items or introduction of future issues for council consideration. Speakers are requested to state their name and address and limit comments to three minutes.
