Newtown Police Log Incidents Include Winter Crashes, Traffic Stops, Court Order Cases

Newtown Police reported 29 incidents ranging from winter crashes and deer strikes to court order cases and traffic stops.

NEWTOWN, CT — Newtown Police documented 29 incidents during late December and January, including winter-weather crashes, traffic stops, violations of court orders, deer strikes, parking lot collisions, and property damage, according to department logs and incident reports.

A significant number of the incidents involved motor vehicle crashes during snow, ice, or reduced-traction conditions. Police responded to multiple single-vehicle crashes in which drivers lost control and left the roadway, striking trees, guardrails, utility poles, signs, mailboxes, embankments, and stone walls. Several of those crashes occurred on roads including Berkshire Road, Toddy Hill Road, Mt. Pleasant Road, Hattertown Road, Bancroft Road, Schoolhouse Hill Road, Chestnut Hill Road, Currituck Road, Boggs Hill Road, and South Main Street. In most cases, no injuries were reported, though several drivers were evaluated by emergency medical personnel or transported to Danbury Hospital with suspected minor injuries. Warnings or infractions were issued in cases involving speed, lane violations, or failure to maintain control.

Police also reported numerous two-vehicle crashes, many at intersections or during stop-and-go traffic. Rear-end collisions were reported on roads including Berkshire Road, Hanover Road, Walnut Tree Hill Road, Hawleyville Road, The Old Road, and South Main Street. Several intersection crashes occurred after drivers failed to yield, entered traffic from side streets, or slid through stop signs on icy pavement. While most collisions resulted in property damage only, a small number involved injuries that required hospital evaluation. Enforcement varied by incident, with warnings or infractions issued when applicable.

Deer strikes were reported on several occasions, including incidents on Dodgingtown Road, Jeremiah Road, Great Ring Road, Boggs Hill Road, and other roadways. Police said vehicles sustained front-end damage in those crashes, though no injuries to occupants were reported. In some cases, injured deer were dispatched or fled into nearby woods.

In addition to traffic-related incidents, police documented multiple parking lot collisions and property damage complaints, including hit-and-run investigations. Reports included damage in commercial parking lots, a minor collision in a drive-thru lane, damage caused by a snowplow striking a building gutter, and several mailbox strikes where the responsible vehicle left the scene. Some investigations remained open due to a lack of identifying information.

Police logs also reflected several traffic-related criminal cases. Officers reported multiple stops involving operating under suspension, improper use of license plates, lack of registration or insurance, and other motor vehicle violations. Individuals in those cases were released with court dates scheduled in Danbury Superior Court.

Police further reported responses to disturbances and violations of court-issued protective orders at residential locations in Newtown and Sandy Hook. In those cases, individuals were charged and released pending court appearances, according to department records.

Across the 29 incidents, police said enforcement decisions depended on roadway conditions, driver statements, available evidence, and whether incidents occurred on public roads or private property.
