Newtown Police Log: Winter Crashes, Deer Strikes, Intersection Collisions, And Property Damage Reports

NEWTOWN, CT — Newtown Police documented multiple incidents during late December and early January, including winter-weather crashes, multiple intersection collisions, deer strikes, parking lot incidents, and property damage, according to department reports.

Several incidents were attributed to snow, ice, or reduced traction on local roads. Police responded Jan. 2 to a crash on Berkshire Road near Zoar Road after a vehicle lost control, struck a guardrail, rolled, and came to rest after hitting a tree stump. The driver was transported to Danbury Hospital with suspected minor injuries and received a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

On Jan. 11, a vehicle traveling south on Great Ring Road struck a deer that ran into the roadway. The driver and a juvenile passenger were not injured, and the vehicle sustained front-end damage. A similar deer strike was reported Jan. 6 on Dodgingtown Road near Cemetery Road, where a westbound vehicle collided with a deer and was towed due to disabling damage. Another deer-related crash occurred the same evening on Jeremiah Road when a vehicle struck a deer that entered from the shoulder. No injuries were reported in either case.

Police also responded to multiple single-vehicle crashes linked to winter conditions. On Jan. 2, a vehicle slid on ice while navigating Toddy Hill Road and struck a guardrail. The driver later reported the crash at police headquarters. On Dec. 24, a vehicle on Bancroft Road crossed an intersection and struck an embankment and landscaping after losing control on icy pavement. Verbal warnings were issued in both cases for traveling too fast for conditions.

Numerous two-vehicle collisions were reported at intersections. On Jan. 11, police responded to a crash at Mt. Pleasant Road and Saw Mill Road after a vehicle pulled from Saw Mill Road into the path of a northbound vehicle. Both vehicles sustained damage, no injuries were reported, and a verbal warning was issued for failure to obey a stop sign.

Later that day, a vehicle exiting Dayton Street crossed the fog line while turning onto Church Hill Road and struck a parked, unoccupied vehicle that was fully off the roadway. Both vehicles were towed due to disabling damage. No injuries were reported, and enforcement was issued for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Another intersection collision occurred Jan. 10 at Hi Barlow Road and Gregory Lane, where a vehicle entering the roadway struck a vehicle that had the right of way. No injuries were reported, and a verbal warning was issued for failure to grant the right of way.

Police also reported a rear-end collision Jan. 8 on Main Street near East Street after a northbound vehicle struck another that had stopped to turn left. Both vehicles were towed. One driver was transported to Danbury Hospital with a head injury, while the other declined transport. Infractions were issued for following too closely and operating without a valid license.

Several additional rear-end crashes were reported during the period, including incidents on Berkshire Road near Pole Bridge Road, The Old Road near Mt. Pleasant Road, Walnut Tree Hill Road near Church Hill Road, Hanover Road near Tamarack Road, and Hawleyville Road near Covered Bridge Road. No serious injuries were reported in those cases, and warnings or infractions were issued for following too closely.

Police also documented multiple property-damage and parking lot incidents. These included damage to a mailbox on Huntingtown Road after a vehicle left the scene, a hit-and-run in the Caraluzzi’s Newtown Market parking lot on Queen Street, a minor collision in the Starbucks drive-thru on Church Hill Road, and a snowplow striking a gutter at the Botsford Fire Department while clearing snow. No injuries were reported in those cases.

Additional incidents included a vehicle striking a flagpole while turning at Church Hill Road and Main Street, a vehicle leaving the roadway and damaging bushes on Mt. Pleasant Road, and a vehicle sliding into a parked car in a commercial lot. Enforcement varied based on circumstances, with several incidents occurring on private property where no citations were issued.
