Newtown Police Report Incidents Including Winter Crashes, Pedestrian Strike, Traffic Stops And Property Da
Newtown Police logged winter crashes, a pedestrian injury, traffic stops and property damage incidents in mid-January.
NEWTOWN, CT — Newtown Police documented numerous incidents in mid- to late January, including a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle, multiple winter-weather crashes, traffic stops that led to criminal charges, and several property damage reports, according to department logs and incident summaries.
One of the most serious incidents occurred Jan. 14 on Mile Hill Road, about a tenth of a mile west of Newtown. Police said a pickup truck traveling east struck a pedestrian who was crossing the roadway. The pedestrian was transported to Danbury Hospital with suspected serious injuries. Police issued a verbal warning to the pedestrian for reckless use of a highway.
Another crash involving injuries was reported Jan. 23 at the intersection of Hawleyville Road and Currituck Road. Police said a vehicle stopped on Currituck Road entered the intersection to turn left and was struck by a northbound vehicle on Hawleyville Road. Both drivers were taken to Danbury Hospital with suspected minor injuries. Police issued infractions for failure to grant the right of way and operating without a license.

Several two-vehicle crashes occurred during winter conditions. On Jan. 22, police responded to a sideswipe collision on Toddy Hill Road near Marlin Road involving two vehicles traveling in opposite directions. Both vehicles were towed, but no injuries were reported. Due to conflicting statements, police said no enforcement action was taken.
Another rear-end crash was reported Jan. 22 on Hawleyville Road near Barnabas Road after traffic slowed. No injuries were reported, and an infraction was issued for following too closely.

Police also reported a rear-end collision Jan. 19 on Mt. Pleasant Road near Pocono Road after a tractor-trailer slid while braking and struck a stopped vehicle. No injuries were reported, and an infraction was issued for failure to maintain a reasonable distance.
Multiple single-vehicle and property-damage incidents were also logged. On Jan. 17, an unknown vehicle left Poverty Hollow Road and struck a mailbox at a residence before leaving the area. Police asked anyone with information to contact the department.
A hit-and-run was reported Jan. 23 in front of Caraluzzi’s Market on Queen Street after a parked pickup truck was damaged by an unknown vehicle exiting a parking space.
On Jan. 25, police responded to a private-property crash on Church Hill Road, where a pickup truck plowing a residential parking lot slid on snow and struck a parked car. No injuries were reported, and no enforcement action was authorized.
Police also documented a traffic stop Jan. 20 on Obtuse Road after officers observed unusual driving behavior and determined the license plates did not match the vehicle. The operator, a Redding woman, was charged with multiple motor vehicle violations, including operating under suspension, misuse of plates and operating an unregistered vehicle. She was released on a promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court.
Additional incidents during the period included vehicles sliding off roadways, striking guardrails, signs and mailboxes, or colliding with stopped traffic amid snowy and icy conditions. In most cases, police reported no injuries and issued warnings or infractions based on road conditions and circumstances.
