Newtown Selectmen To Consider $10M In Capital Appropriations At March 2 Meeting
Newtown selectmen will consider $10M in capital appropriations for schools, library, bridges and infrastructure March 2.
NEWTOWN, CT — The Newtown Board of Selectmen is scheduled to consider more than $10 million in proposed capital appropriations and bond authorizations during its regular meeting on Monday, March 2.
The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose St..
According to the published agenda, the board will review and potentially act on a series of resolutions tied to projects in the town’s 2026–27 through 2030–31 Capital Improvement Plan.

Library, School And Public Works Projects
Among the largest proposed appropriations is $720,000 for planning, design, renovation and construction improvements to the Cyrenius H. Booth Library parking lot and sidewalks, along with authorization to issue bonds for that amount.
The board will also consider $640,000 for planning and restoration of the pool at Newtown High School and $500,000 for HVAC upgrades to the high school pool.

Additional school-related proposals include:
- $280,000 for millwork installation and restoration at Middle Gate Elementary School
- $280,000 for parking lot improvements at Head O’Meadow Elementary School
- $1,125,000 for artificial turf field replacement at Treadwell Memorial Park
- $250,000 for fire and security alarm system replacements at Newtown High School
- $230,000 for oil tank removal and replacement at Newtown High School
- $225,000 for oil tank replacement at Head O’Meadow Elementary School
- $220,000 for bathroom facility upgrades at Middle Gate Elementary School
Infrastructure And Facilities
The board will review $600,000 for salt storage facility improvements at Public Works and $500,000 for parking lot upgrades on Trades Lane.
A $1 million appropriation is proposed for the town’s bridge replacement program, along with $200,000 for land or easement acquisitions for open space preservation, farmland preservation and conservation.
Other capital items include HVAC upgrades at Newtown High School totaling $2,317,210 and improvements to the multipurpose building, with amendments to use bond premium funds for cost adjustments.
Additional Appropriations And Transfers
Selectmen are also scheduled to consider smaller special appropriations, including:
- $239,000 for multipurpose room upgrades
- $265,000 for automated dividing walls
- $287,000 for Dickinson Playground artificial turf
- $60,000 for town match grants
- $30,000 for DPW building improvements
- $150,000 in non-recurring funds for Fairfield Hills parking
- $120,000 for Community Center splash pad
- $20,249 for abandoned retirement funds to cover Library and Edmond Town Hall costs
- $17,768 for CIRMA non-monetary claims coverage
- $157,919 for Town Aid for Roads
- A $290,000 transfer for winter maintenance
Recurring business includes appointments and reappointments, tax refunds and voter comments.
The agenda also includes acceptance of minutes from Feb. 2 and Feb. 17, communications, and reports from First Selectman Bruce Walczak and the finance director.
