Sandy Hook Business Spotlight: Out of Hand

Our small business series shares the stories behind our local businesses.

Every local business has a story worth sharing with the community. And that’s the belief behind this exciting series we’ve kicked off at Patch — to shine the spotlight on all our favorite local businesses, and to learn a little about the ones we may not know that well.

How did you come up with the name?

Craftsmanship has always been a major element in the work we do. Our first job was to create companion books for Norm Abram’s NEW YANKEE WORKSHOP series, which really focused on hand craftsmanship.

Because the Internet has made it possible for anyone to be a writer, the standard for good writing has plummeted in recent years. It can be difficult to convince business people that professional writing and editing services can make a huge difference in their success in the marketplace.

Were there any challenges that made you second guess your decision to be an entrepreneur?

Paying for your own health insurance and other benefits is a financial hardship that many small businesses face.

What’s been your favorite moment or proudest achievement since opening?

What’s the most innovative idea your employees or customers have had that you put into practice?

Developing a website (myHOMEscience.com) that helps homeowners understand how different systems interact to affect home comfort, energy efficiency, durability and healthfulness.

How do you deal with difficult customers?

1. Respond promptly.
2. Listen carefully.
3. Promise what you can reasonably deliver.
4. Do what you say you will.

How does your business give back or get involved in the community?
