Tesla Goes Airborne, Slams Into Tree In Newtown Crash: Police

NEWTOWN, CT — A driver was hospitalized after a Tesla went airborne and crashed into a tree in Newtown, according to police.

The crash happened around 6:55 p.m. April 11 on Taunton Hill Road near Birch Hill Road, police said.

Investigators said a 2021 Tesla Model 3 was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when it approached a right-hand curve and failed to stay in its lane.

The vehicle crossed into the northbound side of the road, struck a curb and went off the roadway onto a residential property, police said.

The Tesla then hit rocks, became airborne and struck a utility wire before crashing into a tree, where it came to rest.

Emergency crews extricated the 32-year-old male driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was taken to Danbury Hospital with non-specific injuries, police said.

The vehicle’s airbags deployed and the car began to smoke following the crash, according to police.

The roadway remained open during the response and investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Newtown police.
