Jogger, Soccer Parents Help Apprehend Motorcycle Thief: North Haven Police

The community rallied together in apprehending the suspect until police arrived.

The Rock Road community really rallied together in helping to apprehend a North Haven 18-year-old suspected of stealing a motorcycle out of resident’s garage.

Included in the community effort was a jogger who engaged the suspect, later identified as Shawn Hammond, in a foot chase and several parents in the area soccer game helped stop Hammond and hold him down until police arrived.

It all started around 10 a.m. on Saturday morning when a Rock Road resident discovered that his motorcycle had just been stolen from his garage, according to North Haven police.

The resident began to look around and encountered a passing jogger, who had observed a subject pushing a motorcycle down the street and went back to check.

Police said another person walking down the street had observed a male subject pushing the motorcycle behind a garage on Arrowhead Road.

The jogger confronted the subject near the garage and engaged in a foot chase with Hammond toward Rock Road near Montowese Elementary School.

Police said that several parents who were at the soccer game helped stop Hammond and hold him down until police arrival.

Hammond was arrested on charges of third-degree burglary and fifth-degree larceny. He was held on a $5,000 bond pending an appearance in Meriden Superior Court.
