Bond Remains At $5 Million For Accused Killer Of Kathleen Flynn

The case against Marc Karun took years to build, in part due to limitations in forensic testing.

NORWALK, CT — Marc Karun, the former Norwalk resident accused of sexually assaulting and killing 11-year-old Kathleen Flynn in 1986, remained in custody Monday afternoon following a brief appearance in Norwalk Superior Court where Judge Maureen Dennis upheld his bond of $5 million.

Karun was arrested last week at his home in Stetson, Maine and was extradited back to Norwalk where he was charged with murder with special circumstances and first-degree kidnapping.

During his arraignment hearing Monday, Judge Dennis ruled that if Karun is able to post bond, he would have to do so at court and surrender his passport. Additionally, he would have to wear a GPS monitoring device. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 10 at Stamford Superior Court.

"My general rule is to leave the bond set as is without prejudice" when requested by a bond commissioner, Judge Dennis stated. Karun was represented by New Haven attorney Todd Bussert, who Dennis said could argue for a bond reduction at the Stamford hearing if Karun does not post bond before then.

When reached by Patch for comment following the hearing, Bussert said, "We have no comment at this time."

On Sept. 24, 1986, Kathleen Flynn was found deceased in the woods near Ponus Ridge Middle School - a day after she had been reported missing by her mother. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled.

According to the arrest warrant, Norwalk police became aware of Karun as a possible suspect based based on another sexual assault of an 18 year old that had occurred in January of that year. He had been arrested in connection with that incident but was free awaiting trial.

The attacks on the 18 year old and Flynn had similar characteristics, according to police. In addition Karun, reportedly a former Ponus Ridge Middle School student and Brien McMahon High School graduate, was living about two miles from the middle school at the time of the Flynn killing.

Karun was arrested in connection with other sexual assaults in the 1980s, for which he served years in prison.

It subsequently took decades to finally link Karun to the Flynn killing, partly because of limitations in forensic testing.

Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling, the city's former Police Chief who was a lieutenant in the department at the time of the killing, attended Monday's arraignment, but said he would wait to comment until a press conference that was scheduled for Tuesday.
