Connecticut Mom Who Suffered Miscarriage Says She Was Humiliated When Returning Items to Babies R Us

Jessica Huchko says she hopes no one has to go through what she went through at the Waterbury store.

WATERBURY, CT — Jessica Huchko, of Watertown, says when she tried to return new, unopened baby items to the Waterbury Babies R Us store earlier this month, she was humiliated by treatment she received when she couldn't produce a receipt.

In a Facebook post, the mother of three recounts her ordeal, which was made all the worse because she was returning the items - a car seat and a double stroller - because she had suffered a miscarriage and no longer needed them.

"Thank you so much for allowing me to see how compassionate you are to your customers," Huchko wrote about her experience at Babies R Us. "I have never, never ever, been so humiliated and filled with so much hurt by a company in my life."

Unable to give them a receipt (she never thought she'd need to keep it), Huchko was first asked why she was returning the items, which resulted in her starting to cry. Which she says never stopped through her whole experience in the store.

But then store personnel could not find the items in the system (they had been discontinued), so she was then offered half price for the $80 car seat, and $0.02 for the $179 double stroller.

That's right, 2 cents.

"I was so upset and frustrated with this place I started hysterically crying while everyone was watching me," Huchko wrote. "I have never been more embarrassed in my life. I was still in complete mourning of losing my son and now this? I grabbed my store credit and ran out of the store."

Huchko then turned to WFSB-TV for help, and the station was able to convince the store to make good on the rest of the amount she is owed.

Patch reached out to Babies R Us for comment, but did not hear back from the company.

In a statement to WFSB, Babies R Us said it was sorry for Huchko's loss, and for her experience at the store. The company said it was coaching staff on how to better handle such situations.
