Man Arrested After Crashing Truck Into Norwalk Condominium Complex: PD

Police said the collision caused structural damage to the building and residents of one apartment were unable to open their door.

NORWALK, CT — A Norwalk man was arrested after crashing a pickup truck into a two-story condominium complex early Sunday morning.

In an email to Patch, Police Lt. Joe Dinho said the crash was reported around 1 a.m. at the Hamilton Avenue complex, which contains five apartments.

Responding officers noticed a pickup truck had collided with the building, causing structural damage. Additionally, the residents of one of the apartments were unable to open their door due to building damage, Dinho said.

The Norwalk Fire Department and the city's building inspector were both contacted by police. Firefighters were ultimately able to open the stuck apartment door, allowing the residents to exit, Dinho said.

All residents were able to exit the building and no injuries were reported. The American Red Cross was contacted and assisted with temporary shelter for residents of the building, Dinho said.

In addition to the building, several parked vehicles were also hit by the truck. After further investigation, officers determined the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash, according to Dinho.

Thomas Bynes, 63, of Norwalk, was charged with reckless driving and illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence. He was given a $100,000 bond and he is scheduled to appear in court next month.
