NCC Art Professor Creates New Six Person Exhibit

Collecting, Indexing and Reshaping is an upcoming exhibit featuring six creative talents coming together to create one of the most ambitious shows the Norwalk Art Space has ever seen.

Joe Fucigna, who is the exhibit’s curator and Kory Fellow at the Norwalk Art Space, currently serves as Art Professor and Chair of the Studio Arts Program at Norwalk Community College (NCC). Fucigna is known for working with industrial materials and transforming them into unrecognizable pieces of art. From his use of wire fencing to zip-ties, Fucigna uses his work to breathe new life and color into what was once, lifeless material.

Alongside Fucigna, the exhibit features work from NCC Adjunct Art Professor Chris Durante and former NCC art students, Beau Bardos and Francisco Mandujano. For Fucigna, an important part of this exhibit is not only showcasing his art, but the talent of his fellow artists and former students. “I want to encourage young artists, especially NCC students, and give them the opportunity to showcase their work” Fucigna says.

When speaking about the exhibit, Fucigna explained the slightly different approach he took in its creation. He began by selecting the artists he knew would work well and then worked to create the theme which ultimately led to Collecting, Indexing and Reshaping. In reference to the other five artists, Fucigna said, “we all really fit together, I trusted my instincts and my likes.”

Additionally, the exhibition essay was written by NCC Fine Arts alumna, Samantha Weaver, who recently graduated with her Bachelors in Creative Writing. Fucigna felt it was crucial to give Samantha real world experience and creative freedom to tell the story of the exhibition’s creation.

The opening reception will be on March 17th from 6-9pm at the Norwalk Art Space, featuring comedian Michelle Lee and Sculptet Latin Jazz Ensemble. The exhibit will run until April 28th.
