The single biggest issue in town is ______, and I plan to do this about it:
The single most pressing issue facing Norwalk is climate change and its effect on our quality of life. Recent storms have caused widespread flooding in many parts of the City, causing great hardship and loss.
Furthermore, Norwalk has one of the longest coastlines in Connecticut and rising sea levels threaten everything along it, including homes, businesses, parks, and critical infrastructure. We need to look for ways to mitigate the impact of climate change on our city and residents. This starts with the development of a climate action plan to help guide our decision-making process and the incorporation of a systematic approach to climate resiliency and sustainability in all City actions and policies.
Critical differences between me and my opponents:
I’ve had the privilege of serving as a member of the Common Council for the past six years, including as council president. During this time, I've learned a great deal about how the city operates and developed good working relationships with city staff. This has enabled me to better respond to resident concerns and, most importantly, get things done.
Accomplishments:
I’ve been involved in many initiatives over my six years on the council but am most proud of leading the effort to enact plastic bag, Styrofoam and straw ordinances, all of which have reduced plastic waste in the city. I have also partnered with Lisa Shanahan and the Department of Public Works to bring food waste collection to Norwalk and a proposed tree ordinance to help protect and increase our tree canopy.
Most recently, I have led efforts to recombine the Planning and Zoning commissions, which will make the city’s planning and zoning process more efficient for both the city and applicants.
Other issues:
Other priorities include:- Supporting improvements to the city’s infrastructure, including roads and sidewalks to improve walkability and mobility and storm water management
- Promoting conservation and sustainability efforts, and including initiatives to increase the city’s tree canopy
- Focusing on quality-of-life issues to make Norwalk a more attractive place to live and raise a family
- Advocating for responsible growth that fits our neighborhoods while promoting open space and green infrastructure
- Promoting fiscal responsibility and working to limit property tax growth to keep Norwalk affordable
What else would you like voters to know about you?
I am an attorney and pride myself on my ability to work with others, regardless of background or party affiliation, to achieve the best results for the residents of Norwalk.
