Norwalk Hospital earns national recognitions for stroke care
Norwalk Hospital received two notable recognitions for meeting rigorous stroke quality standards

Nuvance Health’s Norwalk Hospital achieved a gold stroke award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, and Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center Certification from the Joint Commission.
The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association awarded Norwalk Hospital Get with the Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus with Target, Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.
Norwalk Hospital also achieved Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center Certification from the Joint Commission for endovascular treatment and management of ischemic stroke. An ischemic stroke happens when a blood clot blocks oxygen-rich blood supply to the brain.

A mechanical thrombectomy increases the stroke treatment window from four and a half hours with medication to 24 hours. Endovascular neurosurgeons perform this life-saving procedure through tiny incisions with greater precision using an advanced biplane angiography system. They use x-ray guidance to lead a catheter through an artery in the groin or wrist, up the aorta and into the brain to remove the clot and restore blood flow.
These recognitions demonstrate Norwalk Hospital’s continuous commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized research-based guidelines. The multispecialty stroke team quickly and accurately diagnoses and treats stroke, and provides education for patients and caregivers so they can effectively manage their health and rehabilitation after having a stroke.
