NORWICH, CT — Police are investigating after a credit card skimmer was discovered at a local store.

Police said the manager of the Dollar General store on West Main Street reported a skimmer device was discovered at the business Monday.

Police responded and seized the device as evidence.

It's unknown when the device was placed on the card swipe machine but police believe it was done within "the past twenty-four hours."

Anyone who recently used a credit card at the store is urged to check their accounts for any fraudulent activity, police said.

A skimmer is an illegal device criminals attach to card readers to capture and steal data from the magnetic strips on cards. Most skimmers fit over card readers but those at fuel pumps are usually attached to a machine’s internal wiring.

The devices have been discovered recently in Connecticut towns including East Windsor, Brooklyn, Montville, and New London.
