Arson Fire Set at Contentious Oxford Power Plant Planned Location

Oxford's top elected official slammed the people who set the fire saying firefighters could have been injured dousing the fire.

OXFORD, CT - The debate over whether a power plant should be built in Oxford has been heated, but now officials say an arson fire was set there Sunday night.

Oxford First Selectman George R. Temple said in a statement Monday that the fire was started at the CPV site. The fire was set in bales of hay and a trailer containing hay bales.

"Some people may consider this activity to be a harmless prank. I do not share that view. Anytime our fire apparatus has to roll, there is the potential of injury to our firefighters or an innocent civilian. The fire could have spread and destroyed a very significant wetland," Temple said in a statement.

"People who start fires to make a point are called arsonists. If they are caught they are subject to felony prosecution. The town and CPV are taking steps to insure that there is a safe working environment at all industrial sites. Be assured that the town supports our first responders and will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law any individual who attempts to compromise their safety," Temple added.
