Beaver Trap and Kill Decision In Oxford Upsets Residents

Some residents are upset over the decision to trap and kill beavers.

OXFORD, CT — A move to trap and kill beavers that are causing issues on the Larkin State Park trail has some residents upset.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has received several angry emails and Facebook posts about permits being issued for trapping beavers, according to the Republican-American.

The beavers create dams that flood the walkway.

Beavers tend to be stubborn about their territory and there is no known repellent that will keep them away, according to DEEP. Beaver trapping season is between Dec. 1 and March 31 and special permits can be issued outside of the season for issues.

Beavers create dams to help them gather food and to ward off predators, according to DEEP. The dams help some other species, but can hurt others, including migrating fish. They tend to rebuild dams that are damaged or destroyed.
