CT State Marshal Accused Of Stealing $12K In Collection Funds

OXFORD, CT — A former Connecticut state marshal is accused of using his position in collection services to steal more than $12,300, according to officials.
Peter E. Karpovich, 79, of Oxford, was arrested Wednesday and charged with second-degree larceny, along with a “prohibited activities” ethics code violation, according to officials from the state’s Division of Criminal Justice.
Karpovich was taken into custody by Connecticut State Police troopers out of Troop A in Southbury and processed by inspectors from the statewide Prosecution Bureau of the Chief State’s Attorney Office.

Karpovich is accused of “using his position to provide monetary collection services to six complainants and keeping some or all of the money collected for his own financial gain in the amount of $12,331.34,” officials wrote in a news release.
He was held in lieu of a $15,000 bond and was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at New Britain Superior Court.

If convicted of the charges, both felonies, Karpovich faces up to 10 years in prison for second-degree larceny and up to five years in prison for the ethics code violation, officials said.
