DPW to Focus on Three 'Hot Spots' for Road Repairs

The Oxford crew is waiting on approval of the town budget before beginning work.

As the spring paving season gets underway, Oxford Public Works crews are finishing restoration work from winter plowing and repairs left over from last season’s road list. But this year's plan is on hold until after the 2013-14 budget is passed.

The Board of Finance’s budget proposal includes a little more than $900,000 for highway maintenance, which Public Works Director Wayne Watt said should be enough to repair what he called the “three hot spots” — Rolling Hills Drive, MacIntosh Drive and Oakwood Drive — depending on the price of asphalt.

Additional roads to make the list “all depends on when, how much we get and how much asphalt costs,” Watt said, noting that the price changes every two weeks.

Once the budget is approved by residents, who will have the first chance to vote on the proposal at the May 14 referendum, Public Works will look at the full wish list and prioritize within the funds available.

A town meeting on the budget is set for 7 p.m. on Monday, May 6, at Quaker Farms School, at which residents will have the opportunity to make comments and reduce line items by motions from the floor.
