Farmer Loses Trailer in Oxford Arson Fire: Report

The trailer was valued at close to $5,000 and was located near the site of a controversial power plant project, which many residents oppose.

OXFORD, CT - Mark Lipton, a farmer in Somers, lost his trailer valued at up to $5,000 after someone set it in on fire near the the planned Oxford Power Plant site, which has generated much controversy and opposition from area residents.

Lipton said he sold the hay and rented the trailer to CPV officials, who have received approval from the state to construct a power plant on the Oxford/Middlebury line, the Republican-American reports.

The hay is used to help prevent water erosion, but earlier this month someone set the hay and trailer on fire resulting in a total loss. Lipton told the Rep-Am he’s never seen anything like this and didn’t have insurance on the trailer.

Oxford First Selectman George R. Temple said in a statement earlier this month that "Some people may consider this activity to be a harmless prank. I do not share that view. Anytime our fire apparatus has to roll, there is the potential of injury to our firefighters or an innocent civilian. The fire could have spread and destroyed a very significant wetland.

"People who start fires to make a point are called arsonists. If they are caught they are subject to felony prosecution. The town and CPV are taking steps to insure that there is a safe working environment at all industrial sites. Be assured that the town supports our first responders and will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law any individual who attempts to compromise their safety," Temple added at the time.
