Kathy Johnson Begins Campaign For Oxford First Selectman

Johnson is a former first selectwoman and is running as a petitioning candidate.

OXFORD, CT – Now that the dust has settled on both the Republican and Democratic caucuses, Kathy Johnson a petition candidate for First Selectman has hit the campaign trail running.

In November Johnson faces Incumbent Republican First Selectman George R. Temple and Democratic candidate Scott Flaherty. Johnson is currently a member of the Board of Selectmen completing her first term in office. She recently switched parties from Democrat to Unaffiliated

Johnson, a former First Selectman ( 2001-2003) has been a resident in town for more than 40 years and wants to make sure that the town does not lose its’ rural character even though it is growing.

“Our job now is to grow in an orderly fashion and maintain as much rural character as possible,’’ said Johnson, a retired Cytotechnologist at Yale University School of Medicine, in a prepared statement. “I am trying to do everything I can to minimize high density housing, but some compromises may have to be made in order to encourage a developer to build something more suited to maintaining rural character, ’she said.

Johnson, 70, has worked hard as a member of the Board of Selectmen these past two years to keep taxes down, especially for seniors who may be on a fixed income, according to a news release. She said she proudly supported a more than a two mill decrease in taxes this year.

“There aren’t too many communities where taxes have gone down and I am proud to say that Oxford is one of them,’’ she said.
