Kathy Johnson Makes Her Case Why She Should Be Elected Oxford First Selectman

Johnson is running as a petitioning candidate.

OXFORD, CT – Kathy Johnson is running as a petition candidate for First Selectman on Nov. 7 and wants to make sure the town maintains its’ rural character, according to a news release from the candidate.

Johnson will face incumbent First Selectman George R. Temple, a Republican and Democratic candidate Scott Flaherty.

She has been working to keep the town’s rural character and promises to promote purchasing additional open space in town. Johnson said she would like to see projects she has been working on the past two years as selectman such as the new Middle School project and new Library to fruition

“I love this town and have invested 41 years here, ‘’ she said in a prepared statement. “I expect to stay here in as many years as the good Lord will give me. I’m not a transient. I’m here to stay,’’ she said.

When she first moved to Oxford she immediately got involved with the town and served on the Oxford Land Trust, became First Selectman in 2001 and then selectman two years ago. In the last two years she has been involved with the seniors, the Cultural Arts Commission and serves on the Plan and Conservation Committee, Main Street Committee, is liason to the School Building Committee and is a member of the Northwest Board of Mental Health.

“I have always worried about the future of Oxford because it was my future and I want to continue to be part of the town’s future,’’ she said.

Her accomplishments have included, according to her news release:
*Fighting for seniors and will look into a possible tax break for seniors.
*Promoting open space.
*Voting to send new Middle School project to referendum.
*Supporting mixed use development on Route 67 but not high-rise development.
*Advocating for the elderly and recently advocated for a new elevator for senior housing complex and will work to seek grants for the seniors in town.
*Being fiscally responsible and worked to lower the mil rate the last two years.
*Supporting new library construction.
