Oxford Budget: Spending Increase Doesn't Mean More Taxes

Officials are working to finalize a budget for next year. Here's the latest on what it means for taxes.

OXFORD, CT — The Oxford Board of Selectmen are seeking a $16.2 million town budget for 2017-18 which includes a 4.1 percent spending hike, the Republican-American reports.

Despite a spending increase, it's likely Oxford residents won't pay more in taxes next year because the grand list is booming. The grand list ballooned $31.4 million due to several new businesses opening this year.

The school board is seeking a 3 percent hike or nearly $30 million. Both the town and schools budgets increase spending by 3.4 percent or an additional $1.5 million, the Rep-Am reports.

However, the caveat with all of this is how much state aid will Oxford lose. If Oxford loses a lot of state funds, which Gov. Malloy has proposed, then the town would have to make changes to its budget for next year.
