Oxford First Selectman Supports $70 Million Proposed Development

While supportive the first selectman does have some traffic concerns.

By now most Oxford residents know a developer is pitching a $70 million mixed-use development, the Waterbury Republican-American reports.

First Selectman George Temple said he is in favor of the proposed development, but he has some concerns, specifically traffic.

“My only reservation might have to do with the traffic on Route 67,” Temple said in a recent interview with Oxford Patch.

But he said he saw the traffic study and it doesn’t look overwhelming.

“The development could be a nice destination spot,” Temple said. “It will enhance rather than compete with our businesses on Route 67.”

Temple said one of the best features of the development is that it gives Oxford a grocery store.

Haynes Development Co. is planning to construct Oxford Towne Center on 32-acres of the Haynes quarry at 297 Oxford Road, Route 67.

The proposed development includes a Price Chopper grocery store, a drive-thru pharmacy, 150 residential units, a bank, medical facility, automotive service center, a chain restaurant, and smaller retailers, the Republican-American reports.

A new town library may also be built there, and it will generate almost $900,000 annually in tax revenue, the Waterbury Republican-American reports.
