Pending Bill Would Honor Vietnam Vets

Anyone who did not complete high school due to service in the armed forces during the Vietnam era would get an honorary diploma.

A bill co-sponsored by Oxford's representative in the state Senate would would honor Vietnam-era veterans who left school early to joined the armed forces.

Sen. Rob Kane, R-Watertown, applauded the Senate's bipartisan approval of Senate Bill 386: "An Act Concerning Honorary Diplomas for Vietnam Veterans." It would issue an honorary high school diploma to any veteran who did not complete high school due to service in the armed forces during the Vietnam era.

This proposal is similar to a measure which became state law in 2011, Kane said in a news release. That law allowed boards of education to award high school diplomas to veterans of the Korean War who left school early to enlist in the armed forces in service to their country.
