Mushroom Walk with Mycologist, Zaac Chaves 
Grab a notebook and join Zaac Chaves on a mycologically focused ecological tour in Ridgefield on Sunday, October 18 at 4 p.m. During this outing we will identify seasonal mushrooms. You will help us catalog species (including possibly rare sightings) and even help document increasing evidence of climate change locally. No experience required. Zaac Chaves works on species surveys for several sites and sometimes with organizations including Harvard University, the New York Botanical Gardens, and the National Parks Service. We have found several new species at many sites and are also helping recognize others which are rare and disappearing. He also serves as the chief editor of the Boston Mycological Club Bulletin, established in 1897.

LaBlast Fitness ® Cardio Dance Workout with Light Weights You will get your heart rate up and sweat a bit with this aerobic workout created by Louis Van Amstel of Dancing with the Stars. LaBlast® is a partner-free, simple, low impact, safe, cardio / ballroom dance workout for all levels. Some exercises use optional light weights. There is no mat. It's fun and energizing. Beginners are encouraged to attend. Wear sneakers and bring light hand weights (if you have them) and a water bottle. Instructor Denise Nethercott started ballroom dancing in 2011 and has successfully competed as an amateur ballroom dancer with Fred Astaire Dance Studios. She is an Open Gold level dancer with numerous accomplishments. She placed first at the National Dance Championship competition in Florida and is the winner of many Regional competitions throughout these years - both Championship and Scholarship rounds. She is proficient in both American and International styles. Denise's mission is to combine her passion for ballroom dance with her passion for physical fitness. Upon discovering LaBlast® Fitness, she knew right away, this was for her. LaBlast® is a fun, safe exercise program that combines the love of dance with the need to move our bodies. Dancing should be FUN! Learn social dancing to a variety of music for parties, weddings, cruises and dance events. Class size limited. Mah Jongg for Beginners - New Classes Starting Fall 2026

One bam . . . two crack! Never heard those words? In this course you'll not only learn what they mean, but will discover an exciting game that is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. When you take this class, you will learn from square one. Or should I say tile one! This primer is very basic and will have you playing in no time. Attendance at the first three classes is a must. You will learn rules of the game as sanctioned by the National Mah Jongg League. Please bring the 2026 National Mah Jongg League card to the first class (see notes below). If you own a Mah Jongg set bring it to class (do not run out and buy one). Come join me to learn this entertaining, social and most enjoyable game. Zumba, a high energy fitness workout, combines Latin and internatonal music with dance moves, creating a fun and effective workout. It incorporates elements of aerobic, interval and resistance training, maximizing calorie burning and cardiovascular benefits. Move to the rhythm of salsa, flamenco, merengue and other global beats. Wear sneakers and bring a water bottle. Instructor Yolima Solano (Tuesdays at 6 pm) is licensed in Zumba ®, a life long dancer originally from Colombia, who enjoys teaching Zumba ® in the area. Studio Knitting for Beginners and Continuing
Keep your mind sharp by learning a new skill and keep your fingers nimble by keeping them moving. This open-knitting format is for both beginners and those who want to continue furthering their knitting skills. The participant will learn the basic stitches and develop skills in maintaining an even tension in the piece. The instructor will provide practice needles and practice yarn until the participant determines a project. After the selection of a project, the participant will purchase the necessary supplies. Projects have included knitting a scarf, sweater, blanket, and handbag. Instructor Lizabeth Doty, a professional educator for over 45 years, has taught some of her hobbies, calligraphy and knitting, to students of all ages for years. Join these fun, productive classes. She is a former teacher. Class size limited. Makeup date, if needed, is added to the end of the session.

Ridgefield History
 The Dutch, The English, The Native Americans and The Deeds This is the story of three different cultures who tried to occupy, and retain possession of the same lands. Each had a different approach and political agenda as they made their land deals. The Europeans did not understand the Native Americans and visa versa especially in the beginning. This was the political climate the Proprietors of Ridgefield had to negotiate as they were establishing their new town. Instructor Lynn-Marie Wieland is a lithic (stone tools) archaeologist specializing in southern New England prehistory with an emphasis on the Indians of the Ridgefield area. She minored in Meso American Archaeology and has traveled extensively in Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras.

Learn how to customize your Start menu and desktop, how to use the Windows Edge browser, how to personalize Windows though its array of settings, how to speak to Windows using the Cortana voice assistant, and how to shop for apps at the Windows Store. Instructor Lance Whitney is a technology journalist and the author of the book Teach Yourself Visually LinkedIn. He's also written a book on Windows 8. He currently writes for TechRepublic, ZDNet, PCMag, and other technology sites. Previously, he was a system administrator with Ciba Specialty Chemicals. Writing a Novel or Short Story 
Participants will learn how to successfully create, develop, or complete your novel or short story by FIRST focusing on the basics, such as character development, scene creation, and a fully developed plot, which will enable you to construct a coherent, satisfying story scene-by-scene, and chapter-by-chapter. Just as importantly, you'll learn how to avoid the biggest mistakes, such as jumping in at page one with no real idea how your story will develop or even how it will end. Getting to know all your major and minor characters first, as well as all the main conflicts and actions of your story, will make your writing a far more manageable and rewarding experience.
We'll look at:

 <li>Building scenes that move your story ahead</li>
 <li>First, second, and final drafts</li>

Beginning Tai Chi (Yang Long Form) Tai Chi, described as meditation in motion is a centuries old Chinese discipline used for health, relaxation, and meditation. Relaxation and inner calm and strength are emphasized. It can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age, sex or athletic ability. Tai Chi is considered a healing exercise. Taught by Gwen Roman (Wednesday evening) and Rod Barfield (Friday morning).
* Gwen Roman has extensive experience in the Arts of Tai Chi and Jin Shin Jyutsu. She has extensive experience teaching Tai Chi and trains with Myles MacVane. Other teachers include Alex Dong, Master Bing, and Wang Feng-Ming. She has taught in Ridgefield since 2005. * Rod Barfield, a former NYC teacher, has been doing Tai Chi exercises since 1994 and has studied the Tai Chi Form under Gwen Roman for over seven years.

Tai Chi Strength and Balance Exercises
Tai Chi Strength and Balance (Beginner): the Natural Way to Promote Health This class is a meditation in motion and a full body workout combined, all done standing (no mat). This first class consists of 35 basic Tai Chi exercises designed to promote better health, stress relief, balance and coordination, concentration, and internal organ massage. These exercises are based on Step by Step Tai Chi: the Natural Way to Strength and Healing by Master Lam Kam Chuen. Please have a set of 2 or 3 pound weights and a water bottle available. Bridge: Class for Newer Players This class is for bridge players who have some knowledge of bridge. The class will be using Stayman, Jacoby transfers, Blackwood, take-out doubles, and negative doubles so players recognize when to use each. We will be building bidding skills and defensive skills. We do this through playing hands which gives players an opportunity to learn play-of-the-hand skills as well. Instructor Mary Watson-Stribula has been teaching bridge in both New Canaan and Ridgefield for over nine years. She is currently working towards her life master designation. She is an enthusiastic and patient bridge teacher. Class size limited. Consumer Health Information for All This course empowers individuals to become informed healthcare consumers. Learn to critically evaluate health information from various sources, identify reliable websites and resources, and recognize misinformation. Topics include sources of medical terminology, accurate information on rare diseases, and communicating effectively with healthcare providers to make sound health decisions. Instructor Charles J Greenberg is an experienced academic librarian with long-term appointments at both Columbia and Yale Universities. He was the founding Library Director of Wenzhou-Kean University in Wenzhou, China from December 2013 to June 2019. He then joined the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine as Health Sciences Library Director from January 2020 to November 2023. He currently is a lecturer at Camden County College, teaching English Composition, as well as a lecturer for the School of Information for San Jose State University, where he has taught online medical and health sciences information topics since 2007.

Practical Buddhism and the Search for Self 
This course explores practical Buddhism as a path to self-discovery and inner peace. We will examine core Buddhist history concepts like mindfulness, impermanence, and compassion, and apply them to daily life. Through discussion on the myths of a happy life, you will learn to understand the human interconnection with the environment, practice cultivating self-awareness, and navigate the challenges of modern life with greater wisdom and kindness. Many concepts are found in the Buddhist bestseller, The Buddha in Your Mirror - Practical Buddhism and the Search for Self by Woody Hochswender, Gred Martin, and Ted Morino (Middleway Press, 2001). Instructor Charles J Greenberg is an experienced academic librarian with long-term appointments at both Columbia and Yale Universities. He was the founding Library Director of Wenzhou-Kean University in Wenzhou, China from December 2013 to June 2019. He then joined the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine as Health Sciences Library Director from January 2020 to November 2023. He currently is a lecturer at Camden County College, teaching English Composition, as well as a lecturer for the School of Information for San Jose State University, where he has taught online medical and health sciences information topics since 2007.

These live online courses consist of the same instructional content as our in-person classroom courses conducted at our local high schools.
Students prep in the comfort, convenience, and safety of their own homes. With easy to use screen sharing technology hosted through ZOOM, we are able to create a virtual classroom in which the instructor and all students can communicate with one another in real time. These lessons proceed according to the exact same format as our classroom lesson plans. Want to learn how to take great photos and videos with your iPhone? Lance Whitney will show you how to use all the iPhone’s camera features and modes, how to compose and capture the right shots, and how to use certain effects to enhance your photos. We’ll also look at the Photos tool on the iPhone to teach you how to edit and organize your photos. Please have your iPhone at class so you can try out the different tools and tricks that we cover. Instructor Lance Whitney is a technology journalist and the author of the book book “Teach Yourself Visually LinkedIn.” He’s also written a book on Windows 8. He currently writes for TechRepublic, ZDNet, PCMag, and other technology sites. Previously, he was a system administrator with Ciba Specialty Chemicals. He's taught a variety of continuing education courses at Ridgefield Continuing Education for several years.

Basic Digital Camera Operation 
Need help understanding how to use your DSLR camera? Is the instruction manual that came with it almost impossible to understand? bring your DSLR or mirrorless camera and manual to this class. This course will guide you to knowing how to take pictures you can be proud of and having a good knowledge of photography in general. All relevant buttons and switches will be explained so that your picture will come out well exposed and sharply focused. Whether you are interested in photographing your friends and family, nature, landscapes or sports, this course will certainly enhance your talents. You will learn how to freeze the action in sports; create beautiful portraits with that blurry background, and use your flash as professional fashion and wedding photographers do.&nbsp; You'll become truly confident in your picture taking abilities. Instructor John Zappala has a degree in fine arts and many years of experience as a photographer and photography instructor.

 Flash Photography - (Creating Beautiful Portraiture with Electronic Flash) The electronic flash whether it is built in or one of the more powerful units that can be added to your camera has come a long way in its development. The original flash was created by igniting gunpowder to create a burst of light enabling an image to be recorded. Then the flash bulb was invented and now the modern electronic flash. The light emitted from these units, although extremely useful in that it gives the photographer the ability to create images in conditions where not enough light exists, is far from flattering. This crude light is most obvious when people are the subject. This flash photography course will teach you techniques used by professional wedding portrait and fashion photographers. These techniques will enabling you to create portraits most flattering to your subject. You will learn how to mix natural light with your flash to create a soft beautiful light and learning to create this light will give you, as the photographer, the ability to make yourself friend and family look their best in the pictures you take.
