Online: Dr. Mark Schenker: The British "Cozy Mystery" vs the American "Hard-Boiled" Detective Novel

Factors as varied as the Great Depression and a spike in urbanization, Prohibition, the writing style of Ernest Hemingway, the violence of the First World War and a wave of Populism combined to create a new genre of gritty, morally ambiguous and anti-establishment stories.
Dr. Mark Schenker, formerly of Yale College, leads this fascinating look at Literary Detectives on Wednesday, November 11th at 7:00 pm. The program will be online via Zoom, and Mark will be available following the lecture for questions and comments from patrons who can contact him by email. The texts to be discussed include The Maltese Falcon, 1939, by Dashiell Hammett; The Big Sleep, 1939, by Raymond Chandler.
This program is part of the Ridgefield Library's 2026 Scholarly Series, Whodunits, Locked Rooms & Amateur Sleuths: Investigating the World of Mysteries, supported by the Friends of the Ridgefield Library.
