St. Stephen's Hosts Depolarizing Within Workshop
This Braver Angels workshop teaches participants to face their attitudes toward the political other.
In today’s deeply polarized world of U.S. politics, Reds and Blues increasingly view the other as enemies—or, at the extreme, demons. Polarization even threatens to tear us from family and friends. In response, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church is hosting a Braver Angels workshop—aptly titled Depolarizing Within—on Sunday, March 23, 2-5 p.m., in the church’s North Hall, 353 Main St. in Ridgefield.
Braver Angels is a grassroots non-partisan movement whose mission is to bridge the political divide and strengthen our democratic republic. “We are pleased to partner with Braver Angels once again,” said The Rev. Whitney Altopp, rector of St. Stephen’s. “Together we hope to amplify the truth that we can make a better way of being humans together.”
Depolarizing Within teaches participants to look at their attitudes towards the political “other” and develop strategies for political engagement without demonizing. Its goals are: (1) become aware of your “inner polarizer”; (2) learn to criticize without stereotyping or ridiculing; and (3) develop ways to speak up in polarizing conversations about people on the other political side.
