Cyclocross Returns To Rocky Hill

Bicycle racers return to Elm Ridge and raise money for the Rocky Hill Dog Park.

If you happen to see what appears to be road cyclists navigating the fields around the amphitheater at Elm Ridge Park you’re not seeing things. The sport is called cyclocross and it’s coming again to Rocky Hill Tuesday nights in September. Similar to steeplechase, cyclocross is a sport born out of Europe and becoming very popular in the United States.

The bicycles are specially built for this type of racing and a cross between a traditional road and mountian bike. Courses are usually designed to test bike handling skills as they are forced to dismount from their bicycles to navigate obstacles commonly referred to as “hurdles”.  The races are an intense 45 minute effort with little rest.

Between fifty to seventy five riders are expected to compete every week. As in past years, all proceeds from the events will be donated to the Rocky Hill Dog Park fund. Last year we raised over $4000 for the dog park and $6000 since the races were first held in 2009.
